Centre member, Hari Budha Magar MBE is a Guinness World Record holder and Pride of Britain Award winner who made history in May 2023, after becoming the world’s first double above-knee amputee to summit Mount Everest.
As a champion of removing limits, demonstrating resilience, innovation and promoting the benefits of a positive mindset, Hari is trying to break new boundaries in mountaineering and complete the remainder of the 7 Summits (highest summit on each continent). When he concludes his challenge atop Mt. Vinson in Antarctica in December this year, he will become the first double above-knee amputee to conquer the 7 Summits – a feat only previously achieved by 500 people in history.
Serving for 15 years in the British Army’s legendary Gurkha regiment, Hari has transformed from injured veteran to record breaking mountaineer. Originally from Nepal, Hari served across five continents with the Royal Gurkha Rifles in the British Army, and in 2010, lost his legs in Afghanistan after stepping on an improvised explosive device. Following this life changing event, he made it his mission to inspire and change perceptions with regards to disability globally.
Hari said “Summiting Mt. Everest in May 2023 was a great start, but it is not enough to show people once. I need to do it over and over to inspire real change. The 7 Summits challenge is my chance to do just that, in every corner of the world. I want to show the world what the human spirit can achieve when you remove limitations. The limitation doesn’t lie in our body, it is in our mind.”
Through his challenges, Hari’s aim is to raise awareness of disability and positively change both the way people with a disability are perceived and how they perceive themselves. His triumphant Mount Everest summit captured headlines globally, with over 1,100 pieces of coverage to date and over 4 billion opportunities to see. In October 2024, Hari was given a Pride of Britain award giving special recognition to his efforts to drive awareness of disability and prove anything is possible with the right mindset.
Hari is currently fundraising for his final milestone – an ascent of Mount Vinson in Antarctica, with every contribution being crucial to ensuring this ambitious goal is within reach. Together with your help and support, Hari’s aim is to make greater awareness of disability around the world and inspire others to climb their own mountain and conquer their dreams.
Beyond summits and statistics, Hari’s mission is to challenge perceptions of disability and inspire others to redefine what they believe possible. Through his climbs, he is determined to demonstrate that with the right support and belief, boundaries can be transcended and new narratives written for people of all abilities.
